Riga, April 17, 2012. – The U.S. Embassy in Riga is pleased to announce that, effective immediately, the visa reciprocity schedule for Latvian students has been increased from two years (24 months) to five years (60 months). This positive development will benefit qualified Latvian student visa applicants who are planning to engage in long-term or multiple academic programs in the United States.

For example, a first-year university student enrolling in a four-year bachelor degree program in the United States will now be able to obtain one visa valid for up to five years that will allow for multiple trips out of the country for the duration of the entire program. This will simplify the paperwork requirements and make it more convenient for Latvians to study in the United States. Previously, Latvian students could only obtain a two-year student visa that had to be renewed if students pursued their studies for more than two years and planned travel abroad.

Students will be allowed to transfer to different schools and still use the same visa on subsequent trips to the United States providing that they properly maintain student status and obtain an updated certificate of student status (Form I-20) form from the appropriate official at their educational institution.
