Riga, October 23, 2009. – Today sailors from the U.S. Navy ship the USS Ramage together with soldiers of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) participated in a charity project in Ogre.
The project is a refurbishment of a municipality-owned building that provides living space for people in need. As part of the U.S. Ship’s visit to Latvia, the USS Ramage sailors worked together with soldiers of the NAF 1st Infantry Battalion to paint the exterior of the building. The remaining part of the reconstruction work is being contracted to a local Latvian company.
This humanitarian project is one of several projects undertaken by the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation in Latvia in cooperation with the Latvian Government and the Latvian NAF. Financial support for the project was provided by the U.S. European Command within the framework of its Humanitarian Assistance program. The total amount of financial support for the entire refurbishment project in Ogre is USD 10,000.
The USS Ramage arrived in Riga on October 21 and will leave the country on October 24. During its stay in the port of Riga, the ship organized several tours for local and national political figures, students, journalists and others.
