U.S. Department of State Opens Registration for DV-2011 Diversity Visa Lottery

Riga, October 15, 2009 – The Department of State announces the opening of the registration period for the DV-2011 Diversity Visa (or “Green Card”) Lottery.  Latvian citizens and non-citizens born in Latvia may be eligible to apply.  Last year total of 90 people from Latvia were selected through the lottery system to apply for Diversity Visas.

Lottery must be submitted electronically between Friday, October 2, 2009, and Monday, November 30, 2009.  Applicants may access the electronic Diversity Visa entry form at www.dvlottery.state.gov during the registration period.   Please note that paper entries will not be accepted.

The congressionally mandated Diversity Immigrant Visa Program is administered on an annual basis by the Department of State and conducted under the terms of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act.  A maximum of 55,000 Diversity Visas each fiscal year are made available to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States, including Latvia.

The annual DV program makes visas available to persons meeting simple, clear eligibility requirements.  A computer-generated, random lottery drawing chooses the applicants for Diversity Visas.

For more information about the DV program, including instructions in both the Latvian and Russian languages, please see http://travel.state.gov
