U.S. Ambassador Visits Kurzeme

Riga, June 20, 2006. – Today, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Catherine Todd Bailey visits three towns - Alsunga, Kuldiga, and Sabile - on her Kurzeme trip. All through her visit, she will be accompanied by the Latvian MP Indulis Emsis. During the trip, she will meet with children in an orphanage in Alsunga and Roma community representatives in Sabile. She will also admire the unique architecture in Kuldiga and walk Pedvale Open-Air Art museum to see the pieces of art exhibited there.

In Alsunga, at her meeting with the Director of Orphanage “Ziluks” Aleta Lipsne, the Ambassador will get familiarized with the way the system of orphanages works in Latvia.

Tolerance in society is among the areas that the US Embassy has been continuously addressing. While in Sabile, a town known for its large Roma community, Ambassador Bailey and Mr. Emsis will meet with representatives of Romas to discuss issues of tolerance and the latest developments in integrating Romas in the mainstream society.

Ambassador Bailey will end her visit with a tour of the Pedvale Open-Air Art museum where works by three American sculptors John Rupert, Keneth Pain, and Will Cavano are among the ten new environment objects exhibited this spring. US Embassy to Latvia enabled John Rupert’s travel to Latvia to participate in mounting his art.

This visit to Kurzeme is a part of Ambassador Bailey’s outreach program. One of Ambassador Bailey’s goals upon arrival in Latvia was to “explore and see every inch of Latvia,” and since then she has traveled to the cities and towns, of Liepāja, Daugavpils, Valmiera, Auce, Sigulda, Jelgava, Cesis, and Kandava.
