US Condemns Attack on Vladimir Vaskevics
Riga, May 22, 2007. – In a statement issued today, Ambassador Catherine Todd Bailey strongly condemns the attack against Vladamir Vaskevics, head of the Customs Criminal Board. The United States government also condemns the use of violence and believes in the rule of law and every right to security. In addition, the US supports the Government of Latvia in their efforts to track down the perpetrators of this crime and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. The United States stands firmly with the Government of Latvia in all efforts in combating smuggling and organized crime in all its forms and in the securing of its sovereign borders. The United States applauds the success by the State Revenue Service and all its efforts to bring transparency to the customs services in combating criminal activity in all its forms.
Ambassador Bailey concludes, “The United States remains committed to continuing our exchange of best practices with the State Revenue Service, the Free Port of Riga, and the government of Latvia.”
