U.S. Ambassador travels to Cesis to mark Earth Day
Riga, April 20, 2006. – U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Catherine Todd Bailey will travel to Cesis tomorrow to mark Earth day, which is a tradition in America since 1970. During her visit the Ambassador will donate books about environmental protection, ecology, alternative energy, earth and air protection and endangered species to Cesis Central library, as well as meet with students from Cesis and Priekuli to talk about the importance of environmental protection.
“Earth Day is the annual celebration of the environment and is a time to assess the work necessary to protect our planet,” notes Ambassador Bailey. “Earth Day has been successful because it evolved spontaneously at the grass roots level. Everyone should be aware of how important preserving our fragile Earth is.”
On Earth Day Ambassador Bailey will take a walking tour through historic Cesis Castle Park and learn about the landscape of the park. She will also have a meeting with the Mayor of Cesis Gints Skenders.
In order to attract more attention to the environmental problems, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson started a movement to protect the environment in 1960s. His goal was to raise awareness among people and governments about the environmental problems. Many Americans supported the idea of Earth Day when it was first observed in 1970 and this year April 22 marks 36th anniversary since the establishment of this day.
