The U.S. Embassy Marks Earth Day with Photo Exhibit at Galerija Centrs

Riga, April 18, 2007. – On Friday, April 20 at 16:00, The U.S. Embassy will mark Earth Day with a photo exhibit on an environmental theme - Environmental Contrasts or Greenhouse Effect at Galerija Centrs. The photos are by four young Latvian photographers from Ziemelvalstu Gimnazija - Jaroslavs Romanovics, Liga Kocane, Inese Mikelsone, and Martins Zvigulis. The display will be open until May 7.

Celebrating Earth Day has been a tradition in America since 1970. In order to attract more attention to environmental problems, former United States Senator Gaylord Nelson started a movement to protect the environment in the 1960s. His goal was to raise awareness among people and governments about the environmental problems. Many Americans supported the idea of Earth Day when it was first observed in 1970 and this year April 22 marks 37th anniversary since the establishment of this day.

“Earth Day is the annual celebration of the environment and is a time to assess the work necessary to protect our planet,” notes United States Ambassador to Latvia Catherine Todd Bailey. “Earth Day has been successful because it evolved spontaneously at the grass roots level. Everyone should be aware of how important preserving our fragile Earth is.”
