The U.S. ambassador greets the U.S. luge teams in Sigulda

Riga, February 13, 2007. – the United States Ambassador to Latvia Catherine Todd Bailey greeted the United States Men’s and Women’s Luge Teams in Sigulda. The teams are in Latvia to participate in the final luge World Cup 2007 event, which is to be held on the track in Sigulda February 16-18.

Ambassador Bailey said, “I am delighted to welcome some of the United States’ best athletes to Latvia. It is always a pleasure for me to meet outstanding young Americans such as those that are here participating in the luge competition, and I wish them great success in next weekend’s contest.”

Currently the United States Men’s Luge Team is placed third overall in the International Luge Federation team competition behind leaders Germany and Canada. In the individual competition, Tony Benshoof of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, is in fourth place overall, and the doubles team of Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Michigan) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto, California) is in sixth place.
