Charge d' Affaires participates in Commemorative Event in Memory of
Holocaust Victims

On July 3, Charge d'Affaires Bruce Rogers participated in a Remembrance event for Victims of the Holocaust. The event took place at the remains of the Gogola Street Synagogue. Rogers, together with diplomats from other countries laid a wreath at the memorial.

On July 4, 1941 Nazi collaborators burned down the Great Choral Synagogue in Riga, along with the worshippers inside. After the war, the ruins of the Great Choral Synagogue in Riga were leveled to create a square, but during the National Awakening period a memorial was created there. In 2007 a memorial in honor of Zanis Lipke and all rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust, was unveiled next to the ruins. The Jewish genocide victim's day is commemorated annually, remembering over 70,000 Jews who were killed in the German-occupied Latvia between 1941 and 1945.
