Embassy Officers Bring US Election to 1500 Latvian Students
During the month of October, American officials from the U.S. Embassy in Riga visited more than 20 schools all around the Latvia to discuss and explain details of the Presidential Election process. The lecturers visited schools in Liepaja, Daugavpils, Limbazi, Salacgriva, Valmiera, Jurmala, Dobele, Valka and Riga. Diplomats described the process by which the President of the United States is elected, and answered questions about the candidates. They also encouraged the students to participate in the democratic process, and to be actively involved in their own community. During the course of the program, 1500 students participated in lectures on the Electoral College, the Presidential campaign, and the importance of participating in the democratic process.
The Embassy also donated more than 300 books and other materials on the U.S. electoral system to school libraries.
