U.S. Ambassador Opens New Sports Field at Daugavpils Orphanage

U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Charles Larson, Jr. visited Latvia’s second largest city, Daugavpils, to participate in opening ceremony of a sports field at the Priedīte Orphanage. During the visit, Ambassador Larson also met with Daugavpils Mayor, Rita Strode. During the ceremony, Larson and Strode joined a young girl from the orphanage in cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Students then had a chance to try out the facility.

The $50,000 sports field project was completed as part of an ongoing series of joint projects involving the U.S. Government and the government of Latvia. The project provided for the construction of a basketball court, soccer field, as well installation of playground equipment. It is one of several projects undertaken by the Embassy in the western region of Latvia, along the border with Russia. Humanitarian assistance projects underscore the benefits of Latvia’s military partnership with the United States, and Membership in NATO.
