Ambassador Larson Visits Local Russian-Language Newspaper, ‘Telegraf’
In order to strengthen lines of communication between the U.S. Government and Latvia’s large Russian-speaking population, U.S. Ambassador Charles Larson, Jr. visited the offices of the Russian language newspaper, Telegraf. During the Visit, Ambassador Larson met with the head of the news department, Andrejs Hotejevs and Editor-in-chief, Tatjana Fasts (pictured at left). The newspaper is published daily, and has a circulation of 20 000.
During the visit, Larson toured the Telegraf offices, and discussed the media landscape in Latvia. Larson and Fasts discussed the role of the internet and electronic media sources, and its impact on the printed press. The Editor-in-chief indicated that many people still find the printed press to be more reliable than electronic media even with the rapid spread and popularity of the Internet. Larson encouraged the newspaper to contact the Embassy at any time if they ever needed a comment or clarification of U.S. policy or positions.
