The U.S frigate arrives in Ventspils
Riga, August 14, 2008. – On Friday, August 15, U.S. Ambassador Charles Larson will pay a courtesy call on the U.S. frigate USS ELROD and meet the captain and crew. The USS Elrod arrives in Ventspils on August 14 and will depart on August 17. On Saturday, August 16, the ship will be open to public for tours from 11:00 till 15:00 hours. Tours will be conducted only in English and adults must present personal identification. The USS Elrod is docked at South Mol (Dienvidu Mols).
USS ELROD was built at the Bath Iron Works in Maine, and was commissioned in Brunswick, Georgia on May 18, 1985. It has completed five deployments to the Arabian Gulf, four to the Mediterranean Sea, and one to the Adriatic Sea, and has participated in numerous operations in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and the Caribbean Sea. During the Arabian Gulf and Adriatic Sea deployments, the USS ELROD protected and defended America's vital interests in that region and contributed to the U.S. naval presence during periods of hostility as well as peace.
In addition to a reputation for operational readiness and fighting skills, the USS ELROD has earned a reputation for community support and participation in charitable projects. The ship has been recognized for the crew's contributions by designation as a Presidential "Point of Light." The USS ELROD has also earned numerous awards during her commissioned service and various departmental and mission-specific awards for excellence.
