U.S. Citizen Emergency Services
Death of American Citizens Abroad
If, unfortunately, an American citizen dies in Latvia, the death should be reported immediately to the Consular Section. In cases of unexpected or accidental death, the Consular Officer may be required to take immediate action. Assistance in case of an emergency is available to U.S. citizens 24 hours a day. Contact tel. +371 6703-6200.
If the next-of-kin was not with the citizen at the time of the death, we will notify them of the death and work with them to carry out their wishes with regard to burial or repatriation of the body.
The Consular Section can also, with the next-of-kin’s permission; act as a liaison between the family and local authorities. We will also prepare the necessary documents to allow the family to return the body to the U.S., if that is their wish.
The U.S Embassy in Riga prepares the Consular Report of Death Abroad for all U.S. citizens who die in Latvia. This document is for use in the U.S. and it is based on the Latvian Death certificate, deceased’s U.S. passport and information given by the relatives. For that purpose the deceased’s relatives should contact the Consular Section of the U.S.Embassy in Riga, Monday through Friday from 8:30 – 17.00 at tel. +371 6703-6200.
