Overview of Non-Immigrant Visas and Contact Information
What is a Visa?
A visa is issued by a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. A visa gives you permission to apply for admission to the United States. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly INS) officers at the U.S. port of entry will determine how long you are permitted to stay.
Who Needs a Visa?
Latvian citizens need a visa to travel the United States. Citizens of countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program are exempt from the visa requirement. Please note: Travelers born in the United States and those who hold dual citizenship with the United States must enter and depart the United States on U.S. passports.
Who Needs a Non-Immigrant Visa?
A non-immigrant visa (NIV) is required by anyone seeking temporary admission into the United States. Non-immigrant visas cover visits for tourism, business, work or study.
Visa in an Expired Passport
Latvians with valid U.S. visas do not need to apply for new visas when they renew the Latvian citizen/non-citizen passports. Unless a U.S. visa is cancelled by a passport authority, it is valid for entry to the United States through its expiration date. When entering a U.S. port of entry, Latvians may present their current passport and their expired passport which contains their valid (non-perforated) U.S. non-immigrant visa.
Please Note:
- We recommend that you apply for a U.S. visa in Riga if you are a resident in Latvia and have ties to this country. If you are resident in another country, it is often better to apply there.
- Because our waiting room is small, we only allow applicants, themselves, to enter the area. In exceptional circumstances, a family member or an attorney may accompany you during your interview if you receive permission from the Consular Section. Parents of minor children are always welcome. Persons accompanying visa applicants to the embassy should bring their passports or other proof of identity.
