U.S. Ambassador Larson Donates Laptops
On Friday, March 28th, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Charles Larson donated three brand new laptops to Apeirons, a non-governmental organization working with people with disabilities.
This donation is part of an ongoing series of joint projects involving the U.S. Embassy and the government of Latvia, including cooperation with Apeirons. These laptop computers create an opportunity for people with disabilities to be actively connected to the world around them via the internet. The goal of Apeirons is the integration of people with disabilities into society as a whole as well as fostering greater tolerance and understanding by the general public towards the disabled.
A representative from the Latvian Home Guards, Captain Harijs Zorgis, was present at the event.
This is one of several projects undertaken by the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation within the framework of the U.S. European Command’s Humanitarian Assistance program. Several more projects directed at providing support to orphanages in Latgale have been approved and are in the process of realization. The U.S. Embassy works in close cooperation with Latvian governmental institutions in identifying and completing these projects. Previous ODC Humanitarian Assistance projects in Latvia include excess property donations to social centers like Veģi, Iļģi and Aizviki, with a total value exceeding 100 000 USD.
