Ambassador Larson Begins Courtesy Calls with Main Latvian Government Officials

Ambassador Charles Larson began his introductory calls with Latvian government officials February 13-15.
On February 14, he met for the first time with Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis.
During the meeting, they discussed the development of mutual cooperation in various sectors - including intensifying economic relations by increasing U.S. investment in Latvia.
They also discussed Latvia's desire to join America's visa-free travel program and issues related to Iran and Afghanistan.
Ambassador Larson said he was happy to be in Latvia, get acquainted with the Latvian people and its culture.
He also noted that he is looking forward to viewing this summer's Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

The previous day, February 13, the Ambassador met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins.
They discussed the active political dialogue between Latvia and the United States, and Ambassador Larson stressed that Latvia has been and remains an important strategic partner for the United States.

The Ambassador also paid a courtesy call on February 15 to Saeima (Latvian Parliament) Speaker Gundars Daudze.
During the meeting the Speaker emphasized Latvia's deep appreciation for U.S. support for Latvia's NATO membership.
He also mentioned the long lasting bilateral relations both countries have and the fact that the U.S. never recognized Latvia’s incorporation into the Soviet Union.
Ambassador Larson in turn thanked Latvia for its contribution to maintaining security in Afghanistan and in the war against terrorism.
Both sides asserted that will work on strengthening bilateral relations and will develop bilateral parliamentary visits.
