U.S. Ambassador Expresses Condolences to the Families of Soldiers Who Died in Iraq

Riga, December 27, 2006. – Today, the United States Ambassador to Latvia Catherine Todd Bailey, on behalf of the United States Government, offers her deepest and sincerest sympathies to the families of those Latvians who sacrificed their lives in Iraq on December 27, 2006. The Ambassador also expresses her concerns and hopes for a full recovery for those soldiers who were injured.

Ambassador Bailey praises the dedication and professionalism of Latvia’s volunteer armed forces who continue to perform superbly in a number of multinational security operations. The Ambassador said, “I, along with the United States people, highly respect these brave men for their decision to serve their country given the global environment in which we live. Not only are they working to defend their own country, but they are promoting world peace. They have made the ultimate sacrifice, and I want their loved ones to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.”

Ambassador Bailey has also personally conveyed to the Government of Latvia the United States Government’s commitment to assisting and dealing with the immediate aftermath of this tragic incident.
